A Complete Waste of Time

(or: At least it is exercise for an aging brain)

Fred Clark is my Hero

It is likely that most of my friends here have never heard of him or of Slackivist, his blog, but you will get an example of his writing, his wisdom and his fundamental decency, right here, as he discusses the victims of the lies the anti-gay-marriage people tell.

He is brilliant.

He is a Christian. As an atheist, I don't often get all fangirly about Christians but I do about this one. Read why.

Edit: That sounded a lot meaner than I meant it to. I have no problems with Christians--unless they pretend that Christianity means you have to ignore reality (I mean the earth 6000 old?) that it's okay to be an intolerant bigot. Most Christians aren't like that at all. I meant my point to be that Fred is not like that. He is so not that.

Delighted and Scared

It looks like I am going to be retiring from the University of Texas within a month or so. I have been intending to do it around the first of the year but after a relatively minor back injury has taken 2 weeks to get to the point where I feel like I can do lab work but no field work and considering that we have a lot of field work coming up in the next six months, I've decided it's time. They need to fill my spot with someone who can do both.

Which is great. I'll be able to do my own research (the kind of stuff no one would pay for but would be really useful) and I can spend more time writing and I can act as a consultant when they need me and it should be great. Money will not be a big issue and medical insurance continues on as before.

But it is a big change. I'm having a little trouble getting my head around it.

Children of Time Award nomination

I am thrilled silly because someone nominated Losing Ianto for a Children of Time Award. It makes me feel so good to know that someone enjoyed that story enough to nominate it.

Stark raving....

Okay, so yeah, I was just reading the lovely Danse Macabre's little drabble Fair's Fair. AND doing so in the buff (which given the story, is appropriate).

You see, I live in South Texas. My AC has given up the ghost again. So all evening I will be playing WoW while I am "stark raving nude" as one of Frank Zappa's cohorts put it in 200 Motels. Think it was Flo. Might have been Eddy. Anyway. Just wanted to share that.

Concerning Torchwood 4
myfanwy
otrame
Here is what I posted in a comment to hab318princess when she (among others) announced that they've got TW 4 in the works:

Torchwood is dead. RTD killed it. I'm not even talking about Ianto's death per se, though naturally, I didn't like it (I actually found the whole "we're not a couple" thing far worse than killing Ianto). It was blowing up the Hub, killing Myfanwy and Gray and (probably) the baby TARDIS that really freaked me out. If Ianto had survived and if he hadn't already killed Tosh and Owen, it wouldn't have mattered so much, but it was the way it was and so for me TORCHWOOD is dead. (Except of course in fan fics)

That said, I think, given RTD's gifts, that he could create a new show about Jack Harkness and even include Gwen (I am not a Gwen-basher) and make something fun and exciting. He shouldn't call it Torchwood because, as I said, Torchwood is dead. Still it could be a lot of fun.

BUT... and this is a big BUT... RTD will do it again. He'll create characters we love, in situations that seem intricate and full of promise and are so much fun and then he'll fuck it all up again, because he can. He may actually get off on the angry squeals of the fans.

So I am not putting myself through that again. It was ridiculous enough as it was, for me to be as devastated as I was over a fucking TV show. I will NEVER trust RTD to do the right thing again. I will not play masochist to his sadist.

The newest Doctor will be just fine, I think

Okay, got a chance to see the new Doctor in action. No spoilers here, so don't worry. I just want to say that my son was right. I think he'll do fine. He has the manic madman down pat and just about the time I was worried how he would deal with the more sombre storylines (because to me Matt Smith looks like he is about 15--but then, I am old), here came the Oncoming Storm, and very nicely done. The way he coaxes people is different. I like it. And the girl that plays Amy Pond is great too.

So as far as I am concerned, I can relax. The Doctor has regenerated and everything will be okay.

I will miss David Tennant. There was a quality to his Doctor that I loved. But then, I have felt that way about every change-of-Doctor.

James Marsters and me.

Oh, yeah. Sure.

Okay, here's the thing. He's gorgeous, of course. But this isn't about that. He's got a quality about the way he moves, the way he speaks, everything. It isn't even all about sex, though the gods know very few men are sexier. Watching him play any part is like eating the finest ice cream with a nice liqueur poured over it, rich, creamy and a little intoxicating.

I will never forget the first time I saw him: Spike arriving in Sunny Dale. This was actually several years after the show had actually been broadcast, but I admit he left me gaping. My son made fun of me. He said I looked like I'd been hit over the head with a brick.

So anyway, having learned that he was performing the Dresden Files books, which I had been waiting for anyway (the audio version, that is), I bought a couple.

Folks, on top of everything else, Mr. Marsters is one of the two or three best audio book performers ever. I mentioned his American accent, which is funny because I didn't even realize he was American because he does the various British accents so well. He makes Harry Dresden come alive. I enjoyed the series a lot and was sorry it didn't make a bigger splash. Now I think they should have used Marsters to play Harry.

So go to audible.com and get those books. You will love them.

Amazing how much an American accent changes his voice

Just found out that James Marsters has been doing the narration on Jim Butcher's Dresden Filesaudio books. He is lovely, very good, but the difference in the voice is amazing. What fun.

A message to my non-British friends

I got a very brief note from my son, who lives in Birmingham these days (West Midlands not Georgia). He said, all us 2nd class humans who do not live where the BBC rules can relax. He says he thinks the new Doctor is going to do just fine and we won't be disappointed. I asked for a for instance and the little bastard refused.

I may kill him, but I do trust his judgement. He was raised on the Doctor.
